Getting started on metal

Start on a piece of scrap or on the underside of the item to get a feel for how much pressure is needed: on metal, it's better to guide the pen steadily and build up the line in two or three passes than to try to engrave deeply in one go. Secure the workpiece or place it on a non-slip mat, as an item that shifts can cause the line to slip. Write in block letters rather than cursive; they remain legible even when the engraving is shallow.
