Transparent acrylic picture frame: the photo floats, the frame doesn't

A solid frame always adds something to a photo - a border, a color, weight. Sometimes that's exactly what you don't want. Transparent acrylic lets the light through and gives the photo a barely visible border: on a light wall, the image appears to float freely, while on a windowsill, daylight shines through it. These frames are available in five sizes, from 11 by 14 cm to 26 by 35 cm, in several translucent colors.

The sizes and what fits inside

• 11 x 14 cm: for a 6 x 9 cm photo - the ideal size for a desk or a narrow shelf.
• 15 x 19 cm: for a 10 x 14 cm photo, the most commonly used print size.
• 16 x 21 cm (A5): for an 11 x 16 cm photo.
• 21 x 30 cm: for a 16 x 25 cm photo - large enough for a wall.
• 26 x 35 cm (A4): for a 21 x 30 cm photo, the A4 print size.
• Portrait or landscape, in color: every size works both ways, and the acrylic is available in several translucent shades.

Choosing the right size

Note the difference between the frame size and the photo size: the frame is larger than the print in both directions, and that transparent border is the whole point of the design. If you want the photo to appear nearly edge-to-edge, choose the size closest to your print - if you specifically want that floating effect, choose a larger one. The translucent colors look their best on a windowsill because the light comes from behind; on a dark wall, a clear shade works better than a deep one. The largest size, 26 by 35 cm, is roughly the size of an A4 sheet, so you can use that as a guide for your wall.
